The Western Trails Creative District (WTCD) is named for the four National Historic Trails that settlers used during the Westward Expansion and also for the Texas Trail that brought thousands of Texas longhorns from Texas to Ogallala in the 1800s. The first historical route is the Oregon Trail which passed south of Ogallala and branched out toward California and Oregon. The California Trail and the Mormon Trail also passed through the area. The Pony Express National Historic Trail had a station located directly south of Ogallala.
The City of Ogallala is unique and distinguishable because it encompasses the rich and dramatic history of the “Wild West”. People travel to Ogallala to see the Western heritage and historical sights. One way to view this is through Front Street’s Crystal Palace Revue, the longest running summer stock show in the State of Nebraska. The revue and introductory “Shoot Out” has had sold out shows for the last 60 years!
The community is a draw because of its location along Interstate 80 and proximity to the “Nebraska Oasis” Lake McConaughy. Ogallala is a food and craft beer connoisseur’s dream filled with several top-notch restaurants, bars, a newly opened brewery, historic movie theater, and small downtown boutiques that cater to the Western heritage. It also boasts a vibrant music scene with many live concerts year-round.
The Western Trails Creative District’s mission is to lead creative activities with all community members to strengthen our diversity and original artistry in Ogallala. We strive to make the Western Trails Creative District attractive to all by advocating our strengths and confronting areas that require artistic beautification.
The Western Trails Creative District’s vision is to honor our community’s historic traditions while fostering the promotion and development of our educational, creative and inclusive future.
