The historic downtown of Tecumseh, NE is located 40 miles southeast of Lincoln. Tecumseh was established in 1857. The creative district is anchored by the Johnson County Courthouse which was constructed in 1889 using locally mined limestone. The entire creative district is included on the national Register of Historic places. Tecumseh’s historic town square contains many buildings which were significant architectural pieces in the past.
Tecumseh is known for its museums. In the district there are three museums, including the Johnson County Museum which displays the growth of Johnson County; Sticks Stones and Bonez, a children’s discovery museum; and Montz Motorcycle Museum, the only motorcycle museum in Nebraska with a display of more than 100 motorcycles.
The five-year plan for the district includes growing the creative downtown, implementing a program to offer music and display venues for local artists, promoting a tourism program to increase visitor attraction, promoting programs to restore pride among property owners within the district, and promoting an atmosphere to generate economic growth.
