The Unfolding
An exhibition by Karien Bredenkamp and Jeff Sedrel
October 18 – December 4th, 2024
Reception: Oct 17, 5-7pm
The “Unfolding” exhibition brings together the contrasting yet complementary worlds of artists Karien Bredenkamp and Jeff Sedrel. Through their distinct mediums and approaches, both explore themes of growth, transformation, and revelation.
Jeff Sedrel’s floral compositions capture the delicate stages of lilies as they bloom and unfold, symbolizing life’s organic process of emergence and becoming. His pieces invite viewers to reflect on the natural world’s quiet persistence and beauty, capturing the moments between stillness and full expression. As they gradually open, the lilies offer a meditative reflection on the cycles of life, death, and renewal.
Karien Bredenkamp delves into the depths of the subconscious, using surreal and symbolic imagery to unearth layers of meaning that might otherwise remain hidden. Her intricate black-and-white illustrations lead the viewer on a journey of introspection, encouraging a personal unfolding of the mind and spirit. Each symbol she uses acts as a key to unlocking new dimensions within ourselves, asking us to embrace the mystery of the unknown.
Together, their work embodies the dual nature of unfolding: the external, seen in the visible bloom of flowers, and the internal, experienced as we explore the symbols and stories that lie within our subconscious minds. This shared exhibition invites you to witness these two forms of unfolding—natural and psychological—and actively engage in interpreting the artworks to reflect on your own journey of discovery.
