Upcoming Fred Simon Gallery exhibit: “Sugar Coated” by Susan Moore

Sugar Coated

Feb 14, 2024 – Apr 9, 2025

Reception: Feb 13, 5-7pm

Sugar Coated translates the temporal delight of food into the more enduring satisfaction of painting. This exhibit explores the experiences associated with food, from the anticipation of the first bite to the sensations of indulgence. This complex experience is deliberately and carefully crafted to be ephemeral and intimate. The chocolatier devotes considerable time and attention to their craft. The first bite of the morsel is much like opening a carefully crafted and wrapped present. There is the universal understanding of the mouthfeel of a cream filled chocolate, but that sensation is fleeting.

Moore’s paintings present the sensations of luxury one obtains through savoring decadent delights. Her intent is to make the sensations linger and to unravel the flavors and textures for the viewer. Her process involves researching the subject and constructing a specific composition, sometimes acquiring food from other food artists to emphasize the passion for the art of food. She uses realism in her work to achieve control and focus. By using realism, she can employ illusions to manipulate the viewer into seeing what she, as the artist, wants them to see. This allows her to guide the viewer’s perception and experience of the artwork.
