Fred Simon Gallery presents:
How to Feel at Home
works by Sophie Newell and Cheryl Dyer
March 11 – May 4, 2022
For their duo exhibition at the Fred Simon Gallery, Omaha artists Sophie Newell and Cheryl Dyer use their personal stylistic approach to explore ideas and questions around the exhibition’s theme and title, How to Feel at Home. During the past few years, both artists felt a shift in their artistic practice happening– their studio time becoming a retreat from changing schedules and new challenges. They found the themes of home, familiarity and connection to places of safety appearing in their work as they strived to create in increasingly intuitive and meditative ways.
Cheryl’s pieces reflect her interest in calligraphic text paired with intuitive mark-making, collage and illustration. Through whimsically mysterious mixed media collage and illustration, Sophie breathes new life into images and forgotten or abandoned items, like a faded post cards, battered old library book, scribbled receipt, etc.
Both Dyer and Newell are working artists with a background in design, who accept freelance commissions and teach workshops in their discipline.
