cumulate is an art installation by Leslie Iwai, exploring the beauty and role of clouds in the Nebraska landscape. Suspended cloud sculptures are layered visually, audibly, and tangibly with the work of Nebraska poets, evoking the beauty of the Nebraska landscape and its people. Through this rich gathering of meaning, material, and content, cumulate merges the physical, the digital, and the ephemeral.

cumulate (2024), created by artist Leslie Iwai, is a public art project funded through Nebraska’s 1% for Art Program, installed at the Calvin T. Ryan Library on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus. Nebraska’s 1% for Art law has been in effect since 1978. It places and cares for artwork in public places within Nebraska’s state buildings, State Colleges, and the University of Nebraska system. 1% for Art projects are initiated once legislative appropriations are slated either for new construction or remodeling of a public building. In these instances, one percent of the construction budget is allocated to commission artwork, and an Art Selection Committee is established to proceed through the art selection process. The artworks in the statewide collection are accessible on an online database through the Nebraska Arts Council.
