Margaret Berry
Margaret Berry loves the magic of wax – its smell, its feel and its quick effects when painting, printmaking and sculpting. Previously a batik artist with a Master of Arts degree from UNL, Berry is reviving encaustic art, the ancient process used by the Egyptians for mummy portraits. Encaustic paint is made from beeswax, pine resin and pigment and applied molten to materials such as wood, paper and plexiglass – for a distinctive contemporary look. Techniques include layering, incising, scraping and embedding objects. Residency participants will learn about innovative encaustic artists while experimenting with these techniques and planning a temporary or permanent group installation.
