African Arts, Folk & Traditional Arts

During Denlis’ residency classes, all students learn the basics of Djembe and Dundun playing, inclusive of hand techniques, breathing as well as basic knowledge of the physical components of the Djembe and Dundun drums. In addition, understanding the historical and traditional uses of the drums will help students to understand the drums’ significance and why they should be treated with respect and cared for. Students also learn about the main elements of percussive music (Timbre, Pitch, Dynamics, Texture, Tempo, Structure & Duration) that aid in their understanding of the music being taught. Denlis’ residencies also feature an introduction to Trinidadian Folk Drumming, Dancing and Music where students will learn the history and how to play folk rhythms, songs and dances which are known to be fun and engaging!

Students of a higher grade and students showing a keen interest in learning more are taught more advanced Trinbagonian Folk Music, Djembe and Dundun patterns, rhythms, and techniques. The introduction of playing and singing songs simultaneously, as well as introducing more challenging arrangements comprised of multiple djembe accompaniments, bell patterns and dundun parts that all fit together (polyrhythms) makes up the advanced classes after which students will be encouraged and given the opportunity to be a part of a performing company.

Denlis has been playing Djembe and Dundun since 2012 and has done many shows in Trinidad and Tobago, before moving to the US in 2020. He has been a Teaching and Performing Artist with African Culture Connection since 2022 and has performed multiple times with ACC in public, corporate and in all of ACC’s Annual Events.
